Wednesday, March 13We have been working on a Compare/Contrast essay for the last 2 weeks. We have gone through this process step by step, and the students should be ready today with a rough draft on google classroom.
The pink paper is the students “ticket out of class” today, so remind them often to stay on task, and that they will be handing that paper in when they leave class. When they have finished their self-edit, they should make any necessary changes to their essay. I do not want them to submit yet. I will have them do one more edit before they submit their essay. Thursday, March 14 Happy Pie DayThis day is for revisions. Keep in mind all that we have discussed for the past week on how to write a great compare contrast essay: 6 Steps for Great Compare and Contrast Essays 1. Carefully consider the two things (characters) you're being asked to write about. 2. Make a list of the key similarities and differences. Double Bubble Map 3. Isolate the most important points. These will be your central ideas. 4. Make a tree map that will form the skeleton of your essay. 5. Fill in textual details as you write your essay. 6. Edit! Go over the rubric that will be used to grade your essay. Double check to be sure you have all the parts! Color code your essay in Google classroom: Highlight your 4 quotes in yellow. Underline your transitions both between paragraphs and internal. Highlight in pink the Title of the book and the author. Highlight in green your "so what?" statement.
Friday, March 15 1/2 day for students25 minute class periods. Today will be used to be sure you have all of the following things done
Monday, March 4 Complete the Double Bubble map on page 12 of the Detective Notes. We are going to use this map to help us write a compare and contrast essay on Holmes vs. Stapleton.
Use the Double Bubble to create a thesis that compares and contrasts one similarity to each characters unique differences. (If you are having trouble filling this out ask a classmate.) - In class we used Harry Potter and Voldemort as an example. Here is an example of a good thesis statement for these two characters: **While Harry Potter and Voldemort are both powerful wizards, Harry uses his powers for the good of the wizarding world while Voldemort wishes to conquer the world. - You can model your own thesis statement the same way, however, using the characters Holmes and Stapleton. Tuesday, March 5 Write the introduction to your compare and contrast essay.
You will be graded on whether or not you have all of these things in your introduction. Wednesday, March 6 Begin writing the body paragraphs to the essay. - There are a couple of different ways you can approach writing these paragraphs. 1. Begin with a paragraph on their similarities, and then a paragraph on their differences. 2. Begin with a paragraph on their differences, and then their similarities. 3. Or you can combine them within each paragraph. (Note: The third option can become a little confusing. If you choose this option, you need to be careful to organize it in a way that still compares and contrasts both similarities and differences.) Here is how each body paragraph should be put together. 1. Begin with stating either the characters similarity or their differences. 2. Text evidence for Holmes -transition, “Quote from the book” (Page you found it on). -*Explanation of the evidence* 3. Text evidence for Stapleton -transition, “Quote from the book” (Page you found it on). -*Explanation of the evidence* - Students should have at least two body paragraphs for this essay. Thursday, March 7 - Work Day. By the end of the day Miss Ross's students should have their body paragraphs completed. Mrs. Christiansen's students should have a complete tree map including 4 pieces of evidence. (The tree map will be your ticket out of class on Friday) Friday, March 8 - Many of Miss Ross's students were not getting the body paragraphs finished. So we took a step back to the tree map. Finish tree map by end of class today, so you can use it on the body paragraphs of your essay. If you have finished your tree map... Completion of a conclusion. A good conclusion should: 1. Avoid introducing any new information 2. Conclusion explains how the similarity and differences define the relationship between Stapleton and Holmes. Why is one the victor and the other the villain? 3. Conclusion doesn’t leave unanswered questions (like, “So what?” or “Why should I care?”) in the reader’s mind. |
