School Soft-Closure assignments:We have decided as a department to delay our reading of "Hound of the Baskervilles" until we return to regular classes. During the next two weeks, students will have learning activities at newsela.com available. The benefit of Newsela is a student has the ability to change the lexile level to make the text more challenging or easier depending on need. What we as an 8th grade English/Language Arts department are asking is that students read an article a day and complete the short writing assignment along with the quick quiz at the end. Students do not need to read the articles in the order assigned or any specific articles - just choose eight (one a day). Extra articles have been assigned for students that would like to do extra.
STEPS TO GAIN ACCESS TO NEWSELA 1- To make sure you can access newsela.com, first go to classroom.google.com and login with your student email (s number). 2 - If there is a request to "Join Class", click on "Join Class" for the period and teacher where you are assigned for ELA. (The passwords for each class are on my web page.) If you do not have a request to join your teacher's ELA class AND you have your class period listed, skip to step 4. 3 - Send an email to your teacher that you joined the class (do NOT send this email if you were not required to join the class). Do NOT go to newsela.com until you receive an email reply from your teacher that you have been added to the Newsela class roster. 4 - Go to newsela.com and choose sign in. Click on the Google button and make sure to choose your STUDENT (s number) google email. 5 - It might also ask you to allow newsela.com access to your google email - scroll down and click Allow. 6 - Once in newsela.com, click on newsela in the upper left hand corner and it will give a list of assigned articles. 7 - You do NOT need to do the articles in any particular order. Just do one a day at least starting Wednesday, March 18th. There are more than eight articles to allow you some choice (and extras if you like). Additional information and instructions: Do NOT just choose an easy level to quickly go through the articles (you can change this in the upper right hand corner of the article - i.e. 1030L can be changed to 1150L or MAX). Challenge yourself. Use this as an opportunity to boost your reading, writing and thinking skills. If you find the reading level is frustrating, drop a level. If you know every word, go up a level. We as teachers will be able to see how much time you spend reading the article, your writing assignment as well as your answers to the quizzes. These reading assignments cannot HURT your grade, but it can HELP your grade so try your best! Monday, Dec. 2Character Study: Watch Anne Frank Remembered.
